Sir Walter Raleigh is believed to have named the US state of Virginia after Elizabeth I, the ‘Virgin Queen’. As a result of the British exploration, settlement and colonisation that took place from the 16th century onwards, countless places around the world have names with royal connections. Maryland, USA: named after Mary I

Jamestown (the first permanent English settlement in North America): named in 1607 after James VI & I
